About the Item

A Superb Victorian Cast Iron Stick Stand/Umbrella Stand with Neo-Classical Detail This is an exceptionally fine example of a late 19th-century cast iron stick Stand, umbrella, or cane stand, a functional and highly decorative piece that would have graced the entrance hall of a significant Victorian or Edwardian home. The stand is meticulously cast in a classic black finish, exhibiting a strong sense of proportion and refined detail characteristic of the period's preference for revival styles, notably elements of the Neo-Classical or Renaissance revival. The design features a beautifully pierced back panel with elaborate scrolled foliate and classical vase motifs, lending it an air of architectural sophistication. It is flanked by two sturdy, baluster-form uprights, which rise to support the upper rail. The lower section of the pierced screen is particularly engaging, incorporating highly stylised, crouching grotesque beasts or lions, which terminate the scrolling ironwork and add a mythological or Rococo flourish. The piece is practical as well as beautiful. The upper rail features two distinct openings designed to securely hold walking sticks, canes, and umbrellas upright. At the base, a moulded, dish-form reservoir is fitted with a single, removable drip tray. This essential feature allows for the convenient collection and disposal of water runoff from wet umbrellas, protecting the floor beneath. Perfectly scaled for an entrance hall, lobby, or mudroom, this stick stand is more than a utility item; it is a statement of enduring design and Victorian engineering. It also offers a creative alternative for a fireside stand, holding fire irons and implements with equal style. A handsome, solid, and decorative piece for any discerning collector of fine architectural and decorative antiques.
