A square Kashmir shawl, dating to the mid–19th century, finely handwoven in wool with an intricate allover boteh (paisley) design. The composition features large, sweeping paisleys radiating from a central medallion in deep black, framed by a vibrant border of repeating motifs. The field is dominated by rich shades of crimson, with highlights in indigo, ivory, and turquoise, creating a striking interplay of color and detail.
Crafted using the traditional twill tapestry technique (kani weave), this shawl exemplifies the luxurious textiles once produced in Kashmir for aristocratic and European markets. The boteh motif—symbolizing life, eternity, and fertility—appears here in a highly elaborate form, intertwining with floral details to form a kaleidoscopic, almost architectural symmetry.
