Antique Indian Kashmir Shawl Textile, 19th Century
About the Item
The softness of the pure Pashmina wool and the skill of the work help us to identify this authentic antique Indian Kashmiri shawl measuring 177 × 173 cm (5' 9" × 5' 8") and was woven in the 19th century. Kashmiri shawls have been handwoven since the 1st century AD. and it took from six months to a year to make a shawl. Pashmina wool was taken from the undercoat of the pashmina goats of the high altitude plains of Tibet, Nepal and Ladakh. 19th century paintings depict ladies of European high society wearing Kashmiri shawls, but traditionally in India shawls were worn by both women and men. Mughal emperors favored floral designs in their fabrics, and in the 19th century their designs became more abstract, elaborate and dense. As pashmina wool was not dyed prior to the 17th century, Kashmiri shawls were white, brown, gray or black. There is no doubt that with the dyeing the splendid drawing gains!
