An Italian 19th Century Patinated Bronze Torchere, After Niccolò Roccatagliata
By Niccolo Roccatagliata
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A Large and Impressive Italian 19th Century Patinated Bronze Figural Torchere, after a model by Niccolò Roccatagliata (Genoa 1593 - Venice 1636). The triangular foot base with projecting putti supporting the stem and oval reserves within cartouche motifs, one containing the initials "S.D" with an olive tree in-between and a bull-head below. The stem knot with figures of winged caryatids and festoons and upper part with cherub heads, acanthus leaves and egg and bead patterns and topped with a later white glass globe. The decorative system refers to the documented artistic production of the Venetian workshop of Niccolò Roccatagliata and takes inspirational model from the base of the Renaissance bronze of the Scuola Grande di San Teodoro in Venice, a work signed by Andrea del Bartolomeo di Alessandri known as Brescianino. Electrified. Circa: Venice, 1850-1880. RELATED LITERATURE L. Planiscig, Venezianische Bildhauer der Renaissance, Vienna, 1921, figs. Similar models of this torchere were part of the interior decor collection at the Vanderbilt Mansion in New York (see black and white photo). The Cornelius Vanderbilt II House was a large mansion built in 1883 at 1 West 57th Street in Manhattan, New York City. It occupied the frontage along the west side of Fifth Avenue from West 57th Street up to West 58th Street at Grand Army...

Charming Pair of Austrian 19th Century Polychromed Majolica Wall Sculptures
By Friedrich Goldscheider
Located in Los Angeles, CA
A fine and charming pair of Austrian 19th century polychromed majolica hanging wall sculptures of an elderly couple peeking through a window, probably by Friedrich Goldscheider (Goldscheider'sche Porzellan-Manufactur und Majolica-Fabrik.) Each wall sculpture depicting an elderly man wearing glasses and a traditional cap with his arms extended forward as if it was reading a book or a newspaper. The other depicting an elderly lady, also peeking through a window, wearing a laced cap with a bow tie and shawl over her shoulders, her arms are also extended forward as if it was reading a book or a newspaper. The male figure stamped on the back "78 - II ." The lady figure stamped on the back "37 - 79." Vienna, circa 1890-1900. Man's height: 16 1/2 inches (41.9 cm.) Man's width: 13 3/4 inches (34.9 cm.) Depth: 8 1/2 inches (21.6 cm.) Lady's height: 15 1/2 inches (39.4 cm.) Lady's width: 13 3/4 inches (34.9 cm.) Lady's depth: 6 1/2 inches (16.5 cm.) Goldscheider Manufactory and Majolica Factory (German: Goldscheider'sche Porzellan-Manufactur und Majolica-Fabrik, (now) Goldscheider Keramik) is an Austrian ceramic manufactory. In 1885, Friedrich Goldscheider came from the small Bohemian city of Pilsen to Vienna and founded the Goldscheider Manufactory and Majolica Factory. It became one of the most influential ceramic manufactories of terracotta, faience and bronze objects in Austria with subsidiaries in Paris, Leipzig and Florence. For over half a century Goldscheider created masterpieces of historical revivalism, Art Nouveau (Jugendstil) and Art Deco. Famous artists such as Josef Lorenzl, Stefan Dakon, Ida Meisinger and the two perhaps best known Austrian ceramic artists Michael Powolny and Vally Wieselthier worked for Goldscheider. Several of the artists who worked for Goldscheider also worked for other Viennese studios, such as Augarten, Keramos or for the German brands Rosenthal and Meissen. The Goldscheider family emigrated in 1938 to United Kingdom and USA. Walter Goldscheider startet a new factory in Trenton, New Jersey and returned to Vienna in 1950. Marcel Goldscheider went to Stoke-on-Trent and produced figurative ceramics for Myott and opened his own studio in the 1950s in Hanley. Both brothers died in the early 1960s. More than 10,000 different models were created over a period of three generations. Since the very beginning many of these won first prizes and gold medals at innumerable world fairs, exhibitions and trade fairs. Goldscheider figures...

Caravaggesque Oil on Copper "Flagellation of Christ" Baroque Sicilian, 17th Cent
By (After) Caravaggio
Located in Milano, IT
Splendid 17th-century Italian painting by unknown artist, but certainly a follower of Caravaggio, relying on style and drawing. The painting has a very beautiful gilded wooden frame, with a subtle greek with spheres and an overlying rectangular frame with sinuous flowers on each corner, very elegant and beautiful. The painting depicts one of the most depicted religious scenes ever, the scourging of Christ, and is entirely done in oil on copper. The scourging of Jesus is an episode narrated in the Gospels (Mk15:15-16; Mt27:26-27; Lk23:16-26; Jn19:1-17[1]). Scourging is a flogging, particularly bloody, by means of sticks, rods or cat-o-nine-tails, the latter instrument consisting, in the Roman typology, of a short stick to which were secured several strings ending in metal claws, leads and bone splinters that caused tremendous lacerations and fractures to the tortured person. Chains are used in this scene, both to immobilize Jesus Christ and to flog him, as we can see in the upper right hand of the scourger. According to some personal research, it turned out that the actual scourging of Christ was mostly depicted at the column, while this Christ is on the ground, so presumably Christ here is scourged during the Way of the Cross at one of those stages where he fell. The painting has a very dark coloring, which is why this painting is believed to faithfully follow Caravaggio's style of dry, authoritarian brushstrokes. The painting shows a figure agonizing on the ground that continues to receive beatings and floggings of all kinds, representing Christ; his face is crucified in a loquacious expression of pain, he turns his eyes to heaven as if to invoke God, but at the same time those same eyes admonish the wickedness and arrogance inherent in humanity. Christ has one hand resting on the ground in the act of holding himself, while the other takes a completely unnatural stance against the barren ground. His body appears hardened to wanting to parry the blows, his legs are curled up on his knees as he takes kicks from the soldier above him. Christ is depicted pinned down from the neck with a very large and strong black iron bolt held by the other soldier. The soldier on the right in the foreground wears a one-shoulder tunic with an orange tunic and blue pants. On his feet he wears gray shoes, at his waist he has a belt with an iron helmet...

The temptation of St Anthony. Oil on canvas. 17th c., after David Teniers II
By David Teniers the Younger
Located in Madrid, ES
Temptations of San Antonio Abad. Oil on canvas. 17th century, following the model of David Teniers II (Antwerp, 1610-Brussels, 1690). Oil on canvas showing a figurative scene located inside a cave. To the right, you can see a cross standing, supported; to the left, a hut; and in the center of the painting appears an elderly, bearded man, leaning on a table on which there is a ceramic jug and a skull, with an open book at the foot of it. The man looks towards a woman, who points to something outside, and appears accompanied by a large frog and a series of ghostly beings or monsters dressed in brightly colored cloth and clothing. San Antonio Abad or Antonio Magno (251-356) was a Christian monk, considered the founder of the eremitical movement. He was tempted numerous times by the devil while he was in the desert, becoming a subject frequently represented in art (as can be seen in this oil painting). He is represented in a black habit because the Order of the Knights of the Hospital of San Antonio (Hospitals) was placed under his patronage, being the color of the habits of the members of this order (the tau or Egyptian cross was also the symbol chosen by they). David Teniers II or El Joven was a prominent Flemish painter and engraver, son of David Teniers El Viejo or I and father of David Teniers III, much appreciated at the time for his scenes of villagers and common people, his paintings of monkey painters, etc. . He dealt with the theme of the Temptations of Saint Anthony...
