A South Eastern Congo, Zaire Songye Protective Fetish Figure ‘Nkishi’ of Geometr
Located in London, GB
A South Eastern Congo, Zaire Songye Protective Fetish Figure ‘Nkishi’ of Geometric Form the arms placed to the side A plug of fetish material in the head cavity a strip of old hide and fur around the waist Old smooth crusted patination 19th Century – Early 20th Century Size: 20cm high – 8 ins high / 29.5cm high, 11½ ins high (including stand) The face of this protective figure is typical of the strong angularity of Songye carving. Amongst the Songye ‘Nkishi’ were associated with a magico-religious society known as ‘bukisi’ which controlled initiation camps and circumcision ceremonies. A shaman would ritually add magical substances ‘bashimba’ to activate the figure as a source of power that would give protection and ensure well-being. Larger figures ensured the tranquillity of the whole community and promoted village fecundity and fertility. Smaller personal or family ‘Nkishi’ were used for protection against illness, sorcery, witchcraft, and war and to promote fertility. Due to their considerable powers the figures were considered dangerous and so they were manoeuvred by means of rods or sticks attached to their arms. They were sometimes made to walk as if on parade. These small half figures were not always used as personal protective devices, but were placed in gourd bowls and used by diviners to communicate with the supernatural world. These divinatory calabash were filled with a number of symbolic objects such as chicken claws, teeth, stones, seeds, etc., as well as carved wooden figures. The Songye’s ritual use of calabash can be compared with the baskets used by the Tshokwe. Provenance: Ex English Private collection Acquired 1950’s Ex Finch and Co...

Wood Porn - A Wildly Classy Chess Set (Walnut and Sycamore)
Located in Durban, ZA
The game of chess is estimated to be some 1500 years old. It is hard to imagine all the variations of pieces and boards created during that period. I am exceptionally proud of our interpretation of the battlefield and its soldiers! Featured here is the combination of US Black Walnut and Sycamore a striking contrast of two beautiful timbers. We are able to offer numours timber combinations as well as the potential of brass/copper accent work. This means that although the design is rigid, one is able to tailor an aesthetic which is appealing to your taste. Each piece is solid wood and expertly hand-turned by artisan. They are then carefully finished to ensure a congruent appearance. The legs were inspired by my friend and role-model Jory Brigham...

Mr Shelby - A Hat/Coat Stand
Located in Durban, ZA
The concept doodle for this piece remains roughly etched on the walls of our first factory. I came up with the design whilst on the phone to a client discussion his finely curated hat collection. Following a few iterations, we arrived at what we believe is the finest place to perch your peaks. In a somewhat bizarre circle of life, this piece closely resembles its ancestor, a tree. With a firm base, thick stem and protruding branches we allowed the design language of nature to influence our hat/coat/bag...

Pair Various Positions Nightstand in Walnut and Oak by Master Studio for Lemon
By Lemon
Located in Amsterdam, NL
Inspired by his fascination with the aesthetic allure of interiors depicted in films and literature, Yaniv Chen endeavors to capture the essence of captivating spaces. Reflecting upon his formative influences, he recalls the delightful charm of the classic television series "Jeeves & Wooster," set in the extravagant backdrop of the 1920s. It was within the confines of Wooster's apartment that Chen encountered the enchanting allure of art deco design, characterized by the juxtaposition of yellow timbers against meticulously lacquered, high-polished walnuts and mahoganies. With the Various Positions Nightstand...
