Historically, an ikat chapan robe was a status symbol worn by nomadic tribes and settles in Uzbekistan as well as other Central Asian regions. Paired with belt, tunic, and trousers, the brightness of colours and intricacy of the embroidery were indicators of the wealth of the wearer.
The robe in Mayfair Gallery’s collection is brightly coloured with large, red and yellow geometrical patterns on a cream-coloured base. The inside of the robe is also patterned, with red floral motifs formed in a geometrical and symmetrical pattern.
The outside trim of this silk and cotton ikat chapan robe is elegantly embroidered with white and red patterns. Such embroidery carried symbolic meaning, protecting the wearer from evil spirits. The long sleeves are a beautiful design feature, intending to cover the wearer’s hands and protect them from cold temperatures.

In the Kyrgyz tradition, felt pieces composed of sewn and backed reciprocal designs are known as ‘shyrdak’. Despite their utilitarian function, nomadic craftswomen imbued their felt pieces with the same care and artistry that defined their material culture. Museum quality collectible antique hand embroidered Islamic Art textile called Susani or Suzani.
Very fine art work embroidered with silk thread in many shades of green were used (sacred color in Islam it is the color of Paradise), and shades of pink from light pink to red to fuchsia. The yarns are organic vegetable dyed.
The piece was made in different pieces that were put together.
This antique Islamic folk art piece was embroidered in the city of Bokhara, on the Silk Road.
The uses are limitless however, they are often used as wall hangings, table covers, sofa cover throw, bed spreads and upholstery fabric.
A similar Susani is on display at the Museum of Islamic Art in Shangri LA Doris Duke Home is Hawai.

This Suzani Embroidery depicts three columns of round embroidered medallions each with a different color scheme. The designs throughout have many beautiful and colorful colors including yellow, red, purple, blue, and ivory. There is an embroidered border that frames the design beautifully.
