Centerpiece "The Naiad", attributed to G. Denière, France, circa 1870
By Guillaume Denière
Located in PARIS, FR
Exceptional centerpiece in silvered and gilded bronze, composed of a naiad riding a dolphin, supporting a chiseled shell decorated with reeds, adorned with the head of a river god on its bow and on which a winged love blows in a conch. The whole rests on a pedestal decorated with dolphin heads and cut-out leathers, ending with a porphyry base with molded steps. Historical and artistic context Centers and naves of tables are attested in France from the Middle Ages in order to present spices and other condiments brought from distant lands around the Mediterranean or from the trade of the Silk Roads. The importance of their presence on prestigious tables will be confirmed throughout the decorative arts, evolving during the 19th century in centerpieces, becoming a central element of decoration. Here we find a true virtuosity in the composition and representation of the human figure which is reminiscent of the greatest artists of the Italian Renaissance. Indeed, the fluidity of the lines of the naiad can be compared to the nymph of Fontainebleau by Benvenuto Cellini preserved at the Louvre museum and dated 1545, while the naturalist representation of the marine setting refers to the work of Wenzel Jamnitzer...

Antique Vanity Fair Print 'A.A.A' Montague Shearman – 1895
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique Vanity Fair Print 'A.A.A' Montague Shearman – 1895 This is an original Vanity Fair lithograph dated July 4, 1895, titled "A.A.A," featuring Montague Shearman, a distinguished British judge and athlete. Illustrated by "Wag" (the pseudonym of artist Alfred Thompson), this caricature highlights Shearman's association with the Amateur Athletic Association (AAA), as indicated by the title. Shearman is shown in a thoughtful pose, holding a top hat and umbrella behind his back, dressed in formal attire. His observant stance reflects his keen role as a legal figure and sports official. Published by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd., this print was part of Vanity Fair's "Men of the Day" series, which caricatured influential figures of the time. Montague Shearman was notable not only for his legal career but also for his contributions to amateur athletics, making this lithograph a fascinating piece of sports and legal history. This artwork is perfect for collectors of Vanity Fair prints, those with an interest in the history of athletics, or admirers of Victorian caricatures...

Vibrant Varieties: Showcasing Red and Yellow Maize in Botanical Art, c. 1875
Located in Langweer, NL
The original antique botanical illustration depicts two varieties of Zea mays, commonly known as corn or maize. This artwork showcases the diversity within this staple crop, featuring both a deep red and a classic golden yellow variety. The maker of this print, Louis Van Houtte, was instrumental in producing "Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe." Van Houtte was renowned for his detailed and vibrant botanical prints, which were produced through the method of chromolithography—a pioneering print technique of that era which allowed for the rich and precise reproduction of colors. About Louis Van Houtte: - Career and Contributions: Louis Van Houtte was a Belgian horticulturist, botanist, and publisher who operated one of the largest nurseries of the time. His nursery specialized in exotic plants, and he was known for his expertise in botany and keen business acumen. - Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe: This was one of the most prominent works in botanical literature in the 19th century, illustrating thousands of plants. Van Houtte employed several talented artists to create detailed illustrations of plants cultivated in his nursery, as well as other notable specimens from around the world. - Legacy and Influence: Van Houtte's work had a significant impact on the dissemination of botanical knowledge and the popularization of horticulture in Europe and beyond. His meticulous attention to the accuracy and aesthetics of plant illustrations set...
