18th Century Chinese Chippendale Mahogany Gainsborough Library Armchair
Located in Lymington, GB
A good Chippendale-period mahogany Gainsborough library armchair, circa 1760. This is a lovely example of an early-George III Gainsborough armchair in the sophisticated Chinese taste of the period. With well-executed blind-fret carving to the square legs and arm supports. Note the unusual treatment of the gently-outswept padded arms. Furthermore there is subtle shaping to the top of the back. The 'H' stretcher with pierced Gothick (or 'Gothic') carving. Professionally upholstered to a high standard and overstuffed in a neutral soft velvet, with float buttons and close nailed. Raised on old brass castors. Lovely, rich, old colour and patina. In excellent condition with a sturdy frame throughout. These Georgian library armchairs are sometimes also known as Martha Washington chairs...

Georgian Satinwood Pembroke Table
Located in Bedfordshire, GB
A very fine quality 18th century Georgian Sheraton period satinwood pembroke table having superbly figured two flap top, with attractive padouk wood crossbanded decoration, over one frieze drawer opposed by dummy drawer to reverse, retaining original brass handles, raised on elegant square tapering legs, terminating on original brass castors. Pembroke tables became one of the most popular pieces of furniture around the middle of the 18th century, owing largely to their versatility and their plethora of different functions. In fact George Hepplewhite himself actually described Pembroke tables as "the most useful of tables" and many references can be found to them in the literature of the time. People such as Jane Austen even described them being used for dining at, or for writing at, whilst there is even reference to them being used in other places around the house such as for ladies to sit and and carry out their embroidery. One thing that is certain is that the fact they are incredibly versatile even in todays world and can be used for many, many different purposes. The option of being able to use the two flaps to create significant variations in the size of the table top surface is certainly a popular and useful feature. This particular Georgian Satinwood...

George II Mahogany Bureau Cabinet Bookcase
Located in Lymington, GB
An 18th-century mahogany bureau cabinet of impressive architectural form and lovely rich color. George II period, circa 1740. The top surmounted by a bold architectural pediment and centered by a brass finial. The two arched panel doors reveal three adjustable shelves which have candle slides below them. Furthermore, the bureau section is fitted with a stepped interior. This has two secret compartments, drawers and pigeon holes, and the fall is conventionally supported on two lopers. Lined in the best quality English oak. The blind doors of this Georgian cabinet have well-figured mahogany panels of very good rich color which reflect beautifully in the candle light. The chamfered and arched doors display a further level of sophistication and quality. The beautifully-drawn arched pediment is in perfect proportion with the rest of the cabinet / bookcase. In excellent condition overall. Architectural furniture designs on the continent commenced with the arrival of the Renaissance, and they have their origins in Roman and Greek architecture. Nb. Bureau bookcases display books, china or silver behind glazed doors, but are described more accurately as bureau cabinets when they are fitted with blind doors. We often refer to antique bookcases / cabinets as ''secretary desks'' in the US. Information on pediments: 'Illustrated Dictionary...

Dimensions in cm: Height 115 x Width 155 x Depth 60 Dimensions in inches: Height 3 foot, 9 inches x Width 5 feet, 1 inch x Depth 2 feet Marquetry is decorative artistry where pieces of material (such as wood, pewter or brass silver) of different colours are inserted into surface wood veneer to form intricate patterns such as scrolls or flowers. The technique of veneered marquetry had its inspiration in 16th century Florence. Marquetry elaborated upon Florentine techniques of inlaying solid marble slabs with designs formed of fitted marbles, jaspers and semi-precious stones. This work, called opere di commessi, has medieval parallels in Central Italian "Cosmati"-work of inlaid marble floors, altars and columns. The technique is known in English as pietra dura, for the "hardstones" used: onyx, jasper, cornelian, lapis lazuli and colored marbles. In Florence, the Chapel of the Medici at San Lorenzo is completely covered in a colored marble facing using this demanding jig-sawn technique. Techniques of wood marquetry were developed in Antwerp and other Flemish centers of luxury cabinet-making during the early 16th century. The craft was imported full-blown to France after the mid-seventeenth century, to create furniture of unprecedented luxury being made at the royal manufactory of the Gobelins, charged with providing furnishings to decorate Versailles and the other royal residences of Louis XIV. Early masters of French marquetry were the Fleming Pierre Golle and his son-in-law, André-Charles Boulle, who founded a dynasty of royal and Parisian cabinet...
