Late 18th Century Chinese Ningxia Kang Carpet ( 6' x 10'3" - 175 x 415 )
Located in New York, NY
Late 18th Century Chinese Ningxia Kang Carpet ( 6' x 10'3" - 175 x 415 ) Ningxia or Suiyuan, North Central China K’ang Carpet Structural Analysis Warp: cotton, off-white, natural, handspun, Z-4-S; Weft: cotton, off white, natural, winder plied, Z-3-S. handspun, two shoots alternating; Pile: wool, Z-3 or Z-4; Knot: PL,no alternate warp depression, 5 ½ per horizontal inch x 5 per vertical inch = 27 ½ per square inch; Sides: recovered; Ends: n.o. Weft/knots: 50/50, even. Peach border, medallion and corners corroded; sapphire blue highest. Remarks. The golden yellow field employs the classic “grains of rice” pattern with brown pips, centered by a broadly drawn peach scalloped peony medallion and en-suite corners. The matching peach tone border has inward facing peonies in one, two or three colors with short arabesque segments between. There is no corner resolution with diagonal palmettes. The inner medium dark blue border is pearled and the outermost stripe is plain as is characteristic of rugs of the period. The peony corners are bold and direct, without a plethora of intrusive minor elements. The central peony wreath is pared down as well to the most important motives. The contrast in scale between the rice grains, a size independent pattern and the vastly larger scale medallion and corners is particularly striking. The rice pattern...

Antique Georgian Masonic Freemasons Tea Caddy
Located in Northampton, GB
Featuring Masonic Scenes From our Tea Caddy collection, we are delighted to offer this extremely rare Georgian Masonic Tea caddy. The Tea Caddy of box form with chequered edging and borders of Tulipwood surrounding Burr Yew wood squares each featuring Satinwood oval panels depicting Masonic Symbols. The symbols include the past master, senior warden, junior warden and the past worshipful master. The top of the box features inlaid moon, stars and sun surmounted by a brass carry handle. The interior of the Tea Caddy features a floating lid with a turned metal handle. The Tea Caddy dates to the Georgian period during the reign of George III circa 1800.  The Tea Caddy comes complete with working lock and tasselled key.  Tulipwood is also known as Brazilian Tulipwood, Brazilian Pinkwood and Bahia Rosewood. It is found in South America, mainly Brazil. The colour is a warm yellow with streaks or brown-red grain. Burr Yew originates from Asia, Europe and North Africa. It is yellow-brown to orange-brown and usually conforms to a fine uniform pattern. Yew wood usually has black pips scattered throughout so clean veneers fetch a high price and are reserved for finer items. A few trees will produce a burr which offers a distinct decorative finish. Satinwood is found in India and Sri Lanka. It has a rich golden colour and an almost reflective sheen. Satinwood is traditionally used for high quality furniture. Georgian, a period in British history dating from 1714-1837, the Georgian era after the Hanoverian kings George I, George II, George III and George IV. Masonic (Freemasons, Freemasonry or Masonry) refers to fraternal organisations that trace their origins to the local guilds of stonemasons that from the end of the 14th century regulated the qualifications of stonemasons and their interaction with authorities and clients. While Freemasonry is not itself a religion, all its members believe in a supreme being...

Coalport John Rose Pearlware Dessert Service, Orange with Silver Vines, ca 1800
Located in London, GB
This is a stunning and extremely rare dessert service made by John Rose at Coalport probably around the year 1800, shortly after Rose bought up the Caughley factory. It consists of a large centre piece comport, one sauce tureen with cover, two oval dishes, two square dishes, two shell dishes, and eight plates. The service is beautifully decorated in the Neoclassical style. Coalport was one of the leading potters in 19th and 20th Century Staffordshire. They worked alongside other great potters such as Spode, Davenport and Minton, and came out with many innovative designs. When we say "Coalport" we usually think of the one Coalport factory that became famous, but in its beginning years there were two factories, one run by John Rose and the other by his brother Thomas Rose. Thomas Rose went into partnership with Robert Anstice and Robert Horton and they were located directly opposite John Rose, across the canal. John Rose had bought up the local Caughley factory in 1799. The brothers' factories had much in common with each other and they shared many different shapes and patterns. Ultimately, the John Rose factory proved more profitable and John Rose bought Thomas' factory in 1814, making it the one Coalport factory that became so famous. Many of the Coalport items, of either factory, are now collectors' items. This service is made of pearlware, which leads us to believe that it might have been made at the old Caughley premises, which had kilns for pearlware - the later Coalport items are not known to be made of pearlware but the shape of the dishes and the sauce comport are clearly a Coalport shape. All items have a beautiful deep orange ground - they were done in different firings as the colour is not entirely consistent, which makes the service very charming. The rims are set off with a beautiful vine pattern in silver, which makes the service even more rare as this was not done often. The items are unmarked, as is usual for that era, except the odd "B", which is probably the gilder's tally mark. CONDITION REPORT The service is in good usable condition with some minor flaws: there is some crazing and wear throughout, which is to be expected of pearlware of this era. The centre piece comport has a slight crack through the side, which is not very visible. One of the plates has a chip on the front of the rim as well as three lines coming off the rim; one has a chip on the underside of the rim; and one has a line coming off the rim. Neither of these stand out and the plates are entirely stable. Antique British china...
