Caucasian Kazak Rug, circa 1910s
About the Item
On a navy to black ground, the notched and pointed crimson sub field displays a navy or black cartouche with six Memling guls accented in straw, ivory, red and black. Four more Memling guls appear at the cornets of the field and there is a narrow main border of ivory squares enclosing crosshatches. This boldly geometric scatter originates in the Caucasian Kazak district or just to the south in northernmost Persia.
