Contemporary Wool Wall Tapestry with Modern Shapes - OPUS XLIV by Mira Sohlen

About the Item

Each tapestry is called Opus followed by its chronological roman numeral in the order they were created. Opus is a latin word meaning a work, used to mean a particular piece of music by a composer. Furthermore, when Mira creates her tapestries she never envisions the final outcome; her vision is her process. Throughout the process, similar to the one of a musical composer, she aims to find patterns of beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion. It is as if different shapes are dancing and her aim is to capture just the right moment where Opus becomes a visual and tactile form of music. Mira Sohlén creates tapestries which are made from a unique method of tiling. Each tapestry is made from handmade tufted shapes in the finest wool (like mini-carpets), which are then sewn together. Inspired by improvised shape study, she continues to explores the infinitive interplay between positive and negative space. Handmade tufted wool carpet.

19th Century Caucasian Soumak Rug Tapestry Wall Art
Located in Barrington, IL
This remarkable Shirvan Soumak from the Caucasus region of Asia is a rare and collectible textile composed of six individually designed panels, each showcasing its own distinct color palette and pattern. Woven using the traditional Soumak technique, this piece features naturally dyed wool, with vegetable-based pigments that have gracefully matured over time, resulting in a beautifully nuanced patina. Unlike kilims, Soumak textiles are known for their thicker, more robust construction and embroidery-like detailing. The weaving technique—wrapping colored weft threads over warp yarns—produces a smooth face and a subtly textured back, creating both visual richness and lasting durability. Originally used for domestic bags and bedding storage (known as Mafrash), this type of weaving is now celebrated as collectible art. Whether displayed as a wall tapestry or integrated into a curated interior design, this Shirvan Soumak brings authenticity, artistry, and the enduring spirit of nomadic life into your space. A treasured heirloom-quality piece for collectors, connoisseurs, and designers alike. Dimensions: 3′ 4″ x 4’ 6″ Date of Manufacture: 4th Quarter of the 1800s Place of Origin: Caucasus Material: Wool pile on a wool foundation with organic vegetable dyes Condition: Wear consistent with age and use The Persian Knot Gallery, SKU 1254 Vintage tribal wall decor, Handwoven Caucasian kilim, Antique horse blanket...
