Shirvan Rug Antique Caucasian with Geometric Design, 1880-1900

About the Item

Hand-knotted between 1880 and 1900, this antique Caucasian Shirvan rug measuring 4' 11" × 3' 4" (150 × 104 cm) is made entirely of wool. The background weave is flat and the reverse is smooth, there are no differences in level between the warps made of three-ply wool, brown and natural white, and the weft is in wool, natural light color. The fleece is low, smooth and thick as in velvet; the rug is light but very solid to the touch. The decoration consists of dense and minute geometric motifs. The jagged outline figures are part of the heritage of typical designs of the Shirvan area and birds are scattered throughout the field, which is wrapped in multiple frames. The blue background welcomes the rich polychromy of the decorations. The assertive character of this carpet makes it a statement that does not fear being penalized by a small space and does not get lost in an immense space, believe me!.
