Old Vintage Tekke Bukhara Turkmen Carpet, Turkoman Rug

About the Item

This is a Central Asian Old Tekke Bukhara Turkmen Carpet from the Turkmenistan Bukhara region with a rare and beautiful color composition. Bukhara carpet (Turkmen Rug, Bokhara, Buhara, Bukhara) is the name of a tribal rug woven by the Turkmen people. It came to be called so because it was traded in Bukhara (Uzbekistan), an important commercial city on the Silk Road when the Silk Road was prosperous with many merchant caravans. Bukhara is described as a “red carpet” because of its many colors of red. The design of Bukhara carpets is often characterized by a repeating pattern of octagonal or diamond-shaped medallions on a solid background. These medallions are usually surrounded by intricate borders and decorative motifs, such as geometric shapes, stylized flowers, or symbolic elements. The colors used in Bukhara carpets are typically rich and warm, with shades of red, brown, and ivory being prominent.

  • Vintage Malatya Kilim Rug Old Anatolian Turkish Carpet
    Located in Tokyo, JP
This is a South Eastern Anatolian old vintage Kilim from the Malatya region with a rare and beautiful color composition. Malatya is a town built on one main street that continues for several miles. It is situated in the Tohmasuyu River basin which is encircled by the high peaks of the eastern Taurus Mountains. This is a fertile agricultural region, particularly for apricots, and has been a prolific weaving area for many years. The modern town was established in 1838; old Malatya, which is close by, was once an important city in Armenia Minor. In Roman times it was important as a garrison town on the eastern frontier, and the settlement came under Ottoman rule in the early fifteenth century. Considering the number of kilims woven in this region there is a surprising lack of diversity in design, especially in the larger kilims; this is possibly a direct result of the Kurdish tribal tradition of weaving only one type of design. Small prayer rugs...

Monochromatic carpets are all the rage right now in interior design because they fit easily into any context. The specimen we present comes from an artisanal production in Afghanistan, hand-knotted with local wool using natural dyes. The non-uniformity of the color is due to the artisan method with which the wools are dyed, and it is precisely these irregularities that give life to the carpet by replacing the decoration and make it a vibrant carpet...
