Antique Samarkand Khotan Traditional Red Blue Wool Rug by Rug & Kilim

About the Item

Originating from East Turkestan, this antique traditional Samarkand wool rug features a distinguished field design with an intriguing combination of mirrored and asymmetric symbolism. Hand knotted in high quality, luminous wool, while the red and golden-beige gridlines are drawn in perfect, spacious symmetry against the deep royal blue background (with a remarkably subtle texture), the interwoven symbols adorn the spaces without absolute definition or consistency, leading the eye to appreciate each individual depiction of lotus palmette and Boteh motifs (symbols of rebirth and flame/the universe respectively). Further intriguing is the conversely perfect alternation of the symbols in the mirrored and middle red and gold borders wrapping the portrait, portraying flowers and Goz eye symbols meant to ward evil.
