Antique Chinese Ningxia carpet 243 cm. x 76 cm.

About the Item

The Ningxia Chinese carpet, dating from the early 20th century, is a fine example of traditional craftsmanship from the Ningxia region, famous for its hand-knotted carpets. Measuring 243 x 76 cm, this piece was made entirely from high-quality wool, which gives it strength and softness to the touch. The predominant colors adhere to the color tradition of Ningxia carpets: the background is a warm light rust, while the borders are a deep blue, enhanced by yellow ochre that gives brightness and contrast. The central design of the rug is dominated by strongly iconic and spiritual symbols of Chinese culture. In the center is the yin and yang symbol, representing the harmony of opposites and universal balance. Surrounding it are four Fo dogs (or Chinese guardian lions), mythological figures considered protectors against negative energies, surrounding a lotus flower symbolizing purity and spiritual enlightenment. Along the border, the rug is decorated with motifs of bats (associated with luck in Chinese culture) and Buddhist shells representing good luck and the desire for inner peace. This arrangement of symbols and colors makes the carpet not only a decorative object, but also a powerful spiritual and cultural talisman. The last two photos show the fully restored headers. It is noticeable that they have been redone with such skill that it is difficult to perceive traces of the intervention. The professional restorers who performed the work, not recently, were able to maintain the authenticity and integrity of the original appearance, making the signs of restoration virtually invisible. Yin and Yang (or yin-yang) are fundamental concepts in Chinese philosophy that explain the 'existence of two opposing forces that attract and are complementary , both essential in the universe. They derive from Taoism and are also used in Confucianism and other Eastern traditions. • Yin: Represents the feminine principle, darkness, passivity, earth, cold and moon. It is associated with night, calm, depth and introspection. • Yang: Represents the male principle, light, activity, sky, heat and sunshine. It is associated with daytime, movement, surface and exteriority. The circle that encloses the entire Yin Yang symbol represents everything that exists in the universe.
