This hand-knotted wool antique Chinese Peking rug features a landscape scene of a pagoda with camel-back bridges and a suspended lantern surrounded by traditional Chinese floral motifs. Plum flowers and peonies bloom from the edges in a lovely and delicate design of large blossoms, branches, scrolling tendrils, buds, and leaves. The border features large peonies and leafy tendrils that echo the central design, while Shou characters grace each corner. The Shou character represents old age and longevity. The plum tree is long-lived and blooms during the cold of winter; thus, it represents long life and the ability to withstand difficulties. Peonies are regarded as a symbol of unparalleled beauty, love and affection, while also representing riches and honor. This tranquil scene reflects the Chinese belief that harmony with nature leads to spiritual satisfaction.
