About

This rug somewhat unusual for its strong black background and the vibrant color selection comes from the collection of Bunny Mellon. Well known for her discerning taste and a life time of philanthropy Mrs. Mellon's driving passion was flowers, gardening and all things to do with Horticulture. Many of the things we acquired from her estate show this love in great and small ways. She was an avid shopper and retained a painter and decorator on staff to work objects and ideas into her daily life. She possessed a studio for her personal work as well as a place to house and view different objects. This rug vintage in construction and from examination approx. 60 to 70 years old is made from wool yarn hooked into a round rug with large single blossoms of different flowers and the appropriate stems and leaves. Each flower is detailed and well conceived spaced as a ring going around the rug. The work is clearly done by a professional artisan capable of detailed observation and handling the medium. While a little old fashioned and lady like the work is modern and graphic in concept and color setting it apart from a simple little rug. Fully backed in a nice thick cloth the rug might have been intended as a table cloth but seems more suited to use on the floor because of its thick pile and heavy nature. American certainly but by an unknown maker the rug is a great example of Mrs Mellon s ability to choose fine artful work from the entire spectrum of human production.
