About the Item

This traditional handwoven Sultanabad rug has a deep aubergine field with radiating floral motif issuing lozenge vines enclosing regal arabesque pendants, in a shaded tangerine border of alternating linked cartouche pendants, between delicate ivory floral vine stripes, plain outer aubergine line stripe. The city of Sultanabad (now known as Arak) was founded in the early 1800s as a center for rug production in Iran. During the late 19th Century, the firm of Ziegler and Co. established a manufactory in Arak/Sultanabad in order to produce rugs to meet demand in the West. Many of the rugs woven by Ziegler and Co. feature more updated colors and larger scale patterns. Sultanabad rugs tend to have a larger, supple weave and often exhibit a bolder large scale design. Sultanabad rugs are made in a myriad of colors and can easily find a place in any home.
