About the Item

Bessarabian kilims are flat-woven rugs in the tapestry technique originating in the Balkan provinces as well as Ukraine and Moldova during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This area currently corresponds to modern day Bulgaria and Romania. Early examples display a distinct Turkish influence, however, after the region’s independence from Ottoman rule in the late 19th century, their designs tend to lean more towards a European style. This kilim has a true folk art feeling with well-scaled stylized ornamentation on an ivory field within charcoal and scarlet outer borders. 9' 0" x 5' 10".
