Aubusson Rugs and Carpets

AUBUSSON STYLE

Although the production of authentic Aubusson textiles and other furniture is based in Aubusson, France, and at just a handful of small weaving workshops in nearby Felletin, the exceptionally detailed tapestries are renowned throughout the world as wall hangings, carpets and upholstery for a range of seating including sofas and armchairs.

Aubusson’s centuries-old tapestry production industry was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009 by UNESCO, affirming its importance in European decorative arts. The complex and labor-intensive process of weaving images involves hand-dyed wool to achieve specific hues, giving landscapes, scenes and floral patterns a distinctive realism.

Dating back at least to the 16th century, the Aubusson style has changed over time, with early work influenced by Turkish rugs that were popular with the European elite before the rise of the Italian Renaissance with its natural motifs. In 1665, the Aubusson workshops received the Manufacture Royale title, raising their visibility in France and beyond during the 17th century, with many authentic Aubusson tapestries produced for royal palaces and other prominent residences.

In the 18th century, the design of Aubusson textiles reflected the fad for chinoiserie. During the Arts and Crafts movement of the late 19th century, artisans from Aubusson were involved with the Old Windsor Tapestry Manufactory in England. In the 20th century, now-iconic artists such as Alexander Calder and Joan Miró worked with Aubusson weavers on pieces.

The Cité Internationale de la Tapisserie complex, which features a museum, opened in 2016 in Aubusson to recognize and preserve this heritage.

Vintage French Savonnerie Style Needlepoint Rug
Located in Dallas, TX
78359 Vintage French Savonnerie Style Rug Inspired by Louis XIV 08'05 x 11'07. No shrinking violets here. With its magnificiently elaborate details and decadent beauty, this vintage French Savonnerie style rug is a captivating vision of woven beauty. Characterized by predominantly French influence with its ornate florals, the overall design aesthetic draws inspiration from Louis XIV. The ornate floral pattern is set against a black backdrop creating a beautiful juxtaposition between the intricate rose bouquets, winding arrangements of garnished foliage, and rinceaux. Resplendent acanthus scrollwork and trompe l'oeil filigree extend from each corner. The embellishments alone are sufficiently mesjer8z8hg, but the use of color is extraordinary. The colors join to create a truly compelling dance, and inaudibly speak with a timeless voice that is characterized by sensual decadence, as well as by stately action. All facets of this piece collectively entwine to form the striking and grand charm of a textile that is worthy to depict the tender, emotive, and vibrant details of humans and histories, no longer known. Perfect for a large entertaining space, hotel lobby, lounge area, state room, great room, drawing room, country club, academic library, golf locker room, trophy room, private Chambers, great room, wine cellar, executive suite, conservatory, royal suite, billiards room, owners retreat, dining room, living room, or formal sitting room. Iconic in its opulent style, this French style needlepoint rug nterior styles: Baroque, Rococo, Louis XIV, Parisian, Louis XI, Neoclassical, Empire, Louis XV, French, Georgian, Cottage, English Chintz, Renaissance, Romantic, European, Regency, Traditional, Venetian, Carolean and Old World. Whether in a formal setting with elaborate furnishings or in an Ottoman style interior, this vintage needlepoint rug...
