Early 20th Century Handwoven Wool Samarkand Khotan Rug

About the Item

This traditional handwoven Samarkand Khotan rug has a field with five vertical rows of eight indigo and ivory square stepped panels containing rosettes divided by small rosette panels linked by a hooked vine, in an indigo, light brown and ivory cloud-band border between multiple floral vine stripes, outer skittle-pattern stripes. Samarkand Khotan rugs are exquisite handwoven carpets originating from the oasis towns of Samarkand and Khotan in Central Asia, particularly in present-day Uzbekistan and Xinjiang, China. These rugs reflect a unique blend of Chinese, Persian, and Turkic influences, featuring intricate patterns, soft color palettes, and symbolic motifs such as pomegranates, cloud bands, and medallions. Traditionally crafted from high-quality wool and silk, Samarkand Khotan rugs are prized for their durability, fine craftsmanship, and artistic appeal, making them sought-after pieces in both antique and contemporary decor.
