Fine Anatolian Gallery Carpet, c. 1920s

About the Item

Anatolia, the western region of Turkey, has a long-standing rug-weaving tradition, dating at least as far back as the 13th Century. As the explorer Marco Polo once wrote, ‘Here they make the most beautiful silks and carpets, and in the most beautiful colours.’ It is these carpets, among the first to reach the European market in the Early Modern era, that can be spotted in many of the paintings of the Old Masters, including those of Holbein, Vermeer, and Reubens. This fine early 20th Century example features a soft terracotta ground, with a wonderful abrash - or colour variation - which lends a great sense of depth and character to its open design across the central field. The double palmette designs and wide, decorative border are worked in muted tones of aubergine grey, with sky blue and ivory accents. A handsome early piece, with gracefully aged vegetable dyes, retained in very good condition for everyday use, which would make a fine addition to any interior.
