About the Item
Prayer rugs have directional patterns that are pointed towards the holy city of Mecca during meditation. These rugs provide the worshipper with a clean area from which to pray, acting as a barrier from an impure ground surface below. The mihrab or niche is the main element of prayer rugs, with the shapes and sizes in Anatolian examples varying according to the weaving center. The niches found in Melas rugs are narrow and form a distinctive arrowhead. The coloration is warm with soft madder and saffron tones throughout the field and borders with the spandrels above the niche often being ivory and filled with stylized floral elements. The main border of this example has a repeat pattern of small rosettes flanked by large serrated leaves. 4' 6" x 3' 11" .
