Rare Framed Antique Turkish Silk Kumkapi circa 1880 Art Rug

About the Item

A very rare Kumkapi silk rug. This is truly a collector’s piece as not many original Kumkapi Silk Rugs are available in the market. Kumkapi was a village with Armenian population where pure silk rugs with extraordinary quality were woven in the 19th century. Although it is fishing village present day, Kumkapi workshops, near the Great Palace of Ottoman Sultans, produced rugs, which rivaled with Hereke Imperial Workshops and this aim made them weave rugs with amazing quality. This Kumkapi is framed in a large frame on velvet backing that makes for a lovely large art piece. The design is known as ‘Sultan’s head’ and has a beautiful indigo field surrounded by a light gold/peach border. It has a wonderful patina and is woven with pure silkworm spun silk with the same foundation and is dyed with 100% organic dyes. There are no restorations on this rug and is in excellent condition for a silk rug of this age. The rug comes with the frame but can be sent individually without the frame if requested. Size of rug itself is: 70” x 48” Size of frame: 79” x 57”.
