About the Item

A mid century Turkish pictorial rug in the Kechan style. Decorated with a scene showing the Mughal emperor Jalaluddin Akbar holding court, with a bird on his hand. He is surrounded by several men who appear to be waiting to be received. The background shows the interior of a palace, and is framed with a patterned border with ten portraits in scrolled medallions. Signed at the top with a Persian script which reads "Afghan Set, Astani Stew Fardis Makani Jalaluddin Akbaran". Akbar reigned from 1556 to 1605 and extended Mughal power over most of the Indian subcontinent. In order to preserve the unity of his empire, Akbar adopted programs that won the loyalty of the non-Muslim populations of his realm. Although he never renounced Islam, he took an active interest in other religions, persuading Hindus, Parsis, and Christians, as well as Muslims, to engage in religious discussion before him. Illiterate himself, he encouraged scholars, poets, painters, and musicians, making his court a center of culture. Akbar had a phenomenal memory, and was a great political and military strategist. Descended from the militarist Mongols (Genghis Khan), his mother was Persian, and he was a lover of art, music, Persian architecture and culture, as well as animals. A number of the great monuments, mausoleums and architecture in India and Pakistan were built by him.
