Antique French Modernist Carpet in the Néo-Classique Style

About the Item

French decorative arts of the 1930s are distinguished by a more restrained design palette, especially compared to the jazzy floral explosions of the Art Deco period. Artists belonging to the Société des Artistes Decorateurs (S.A.D.), as well as those who were part of the Union Des Artistes Modernes (U.A.M.), such as André Arbus, Paul Leleu, and Jacques Quinet, developed the so-called Néo-Classique style, which was essentially a modern interpretation of the neoclassical forms stripped down to their basic elements. This example is characteristic of the genre, with its architectural volutes composing both the frame and the central motif, set in tones of gold on a pale lavender background—a highly refined carpet, embodying the quintessential elegance of French Modernism.
