Beautiful Large Antique French Savonnerie Rug, Country Of Origin: France, Circa Date: 1850 – French Savonnerie rugs feature breathtaking designs that take you back to a time when design trends were an expression of one’s wealth and prestige. This magnificent rug from around 1850 shows the care that went into these intricate designs. This rug has a delicate feel that reflects the expertise of the Savonnerie carpet workshops.
The Savonnerie workshops were established in 1615 by Pierre DuPont, but later the name was used to describe rugs created at other rug centers that were in a similar style and fashion. They were originally created for the French courts and used in government buildings. This accounts for their large-scale designs and overall size. They remained popular among the upper levels of society through the centuries and have found their way into many fine collections.
In the 18th century, an attempt was made to “modernize” many of the earlier Renaissance designs. The colors became brighter, and they began introducing Rococo elements, as you see in this piece. You will often see elements, like the fleur de lis or the heraldry of a family in the design. Napoleon influenced Savonnerie carpet designs when he began commissioning carpets in the Empire Style. In 1825, the Savonnerie carpet workshop merged with the Gobelin Manufactory, but it continued to produce its exquisite masterpieces.

During the early seventeenth century, a weaver named Pierre DuPont travelled to the Levant. Upon his return, he claimed to have discovered the technique of creating Turkish rugs. Oriental rugs were extremely expensive during Bourbon times, and a French manufactory that could create the same type of rug would lower the price significantly. Henri VI of France–the reigning monarch at the time–took advantage of DuPont’s skills and established a workshop for him at the Louvre. In 1627, King Louis XIII founded a manufactory for DuPont and his apprentice, Simon Lourdes, on the site of a defunct soap factory in the sixteenth arrondissement (also known as Quai de Chaillot). The name “Savonnerie” was born from the French word “Savon” meaning “soap.” DuPont and Lourdes worked together, weaving rugs under a royal patent for the king and other nobles until they had a falling out and split up. Lourdes remained at the Chaillot location while DuPont went to his workshops in the Louvre, though both continued to make Savonnerie rugs.
