European Modernist Carpet, circa 1910

About the Item

During the early 20th century many European designers sought to create whole house experiences for their clients. Every detail, from the furniture, textiles, carpets and even flat-ware were produced for a commission resulting in a space that the Austrian designers referred to as "Gesamtkunstwerk" or a total work of art. The unusual design of this carpet is just such an example of the movement and explains the asymmetrical nature of the design. Most likely, a carpet like this piece would have been designed to function along with the furniture placed atop with great precision, creating an overall effect that was an extension of the designer's vision for the space. Carpets like this piece were, in effect the first commissioned custom rugs of their time, made for the bourgeoise classes. This carpet is hand knotted from wool pile using a symmetrical knot. It was most likely woven on Spanish or possibly Algerian looms during the early 20th century.
