19th Century Victorian Edwards & Roberts Mahogany Painted Pair Armchairs, 1860s

About the Item

Edwards and Roberts were the best English antique furniture cabinet makers. The company was founded in 1845. In 1854 was trading as ‘Edwards and Roberts’, 21 Wardour Street, antique and modern cabinet makers and importers of ancient furniture’. They became one of the leading London cabinet makers and retailers and the firm produced high quality furniture, as well as good copies of the 18th and 19th century. This pair of armchair is an example of a Georgian revival painted in the Sheraton style. Of exceptional quality both the painting, very delicate and well defined, and the mahogany wood, of a remarkable consistency. We find ourselves in front of a very rare pair of armchair that showcases the art of the company "Edwards&Roberts".

Magnificent example of a grandfather clock, England , last decade of the 19th century, late Victorian period, with influences from the coming Edwardian style. We are dealing with a true work of art, a block of flamed mahogany, completely inlaid with floral motifs in fruit woods. Impressive case but of a proportion that makes the cabinet slender and well-proportioned. In addition to the skillful craftsmanship of the cabinetmaker who made this wooden body that looks like a painting, we must dwell on the mechanism! Functioning, 8 reeds and three weights, it plays every quarter of an hour a part of the melody, at the stroke of the hour and after a minute ( it served as a reminder of the hour) the whole melody. It has two selectable melodies; Whittington Chime...
