About the Item

We kindly invite you to read the full description, as it provides detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of the item offered. Iconic Czechoslovak armchair, commonly known as the Banana Chair, featuring a solid and sturdy frame crafted from high-quality steam-bent walnut wood. The design is clean and balanced, with beautifully sculpted armrests that lend the piece a sense of understated elegance and rare refinement. Produced between 1935 and 1938 in Brno (Czechoslovakia), this armchair can be confidently attributed to the design of Jindřich Halabala, based on comparisons with period catalogs and publications. The piece has undergone an extensive and costly professional restoration: it was completely disassembled, the wooden armrests were refinished, and the entire upholstery was redone using a high-quality, durable red velvet, applied with traditional, handcrafted techniques. Jindřich Halabala (1903–1978) trained as a cabinetmaker in his father’s workshop. In 1920, he enrolled at the State School of Woodworking in Valašské Meziříčí and completed his practical training at the United Arts and Crafts Manufacture in Brno, where he later became the chief designer until 1946. Throughout the 1930s, Halabala significantly influenced the development of industrial furniture production in Czechoslovakia, paving the way for a modern approach to interior design. During the interwar period and post-WWII years, he created furnishings that found their way into homes throughout Czechoslovakia and across Europe. David Kmínek, head of the furniture department, once said of him: “There is a fusion of styles in his work—with influences of Functionalism and Art Deco—and Halabala blended them in a way that you can feel both tendencies in his furniture. It’s not pure Functionalism like in Germany, or pure Art Deco like in France or Belgium, and it’s also different from what you see in Vienna, where pieces tend to be more decorative. He brought all of these trends together and created his own distinctive line of furniture that looks very modern”. Among the stylistic influences—such as Czech Cubism and Art Deco—Halabala was also strongly inspired by the Bauhaus aesthetic, which sought to combine the beauty of fine arts with everyday functionality. Over the course of his career, Halabala developed numerous innovative seating designs, as well as two major series of modular furniture and modern steel-tube pieces. His work from the interwar and early postwar periods is now considered of exceptional quality. Thanks to their simple yet modern design, many of his creations remain highly sought after today. Halabala’s designs are part of the permanent collections of major institutions such as the Olomouc Museum of Art, the Moravian Gallery in Brno, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Today, the Czech Republic honors his legacy with an annual award for excellence in furniture and interior design. The armchair, fully restored, is in excellent condition. Zanuso Marco Style Italian Armchair with Red Velvet

We kindly suggest that you read the whole description, as with it we try to give you detailed technical and historical information to guarantee the authenticity of our objects. Very comfortable and elegant upholstered armchair; the frame is very solid with sturdy legs made of polished and brushed brass; the seat is deliberately low but large and comfortable; the wide overall appearance has soft and pleasing lines, perfect for conveying a feeling of comfort and well-being. The armchair was made between 1960 and 1963 by an artisan workshop in Meda (Milan, Italy) that collaborated with several Lombard architects; for the creation of the armchair, the artisans were inspired by architect Marco Zanuso, following his design. Marco Zanuso (1916-2001) was among the greatest interpreters of the culture of the modern, as an architect, designer, and university lecturer; he was one of the first designers to take an interest in the problems of product industrialization, going beyond the aesthetic question to incorporate technological, industrial, distribution and communication variables. The form of an object intended for serial reproduction, according to Zanuso, is thus a synthesis of opportunities, experimentation, and innovations located in the concrete process that links creativity, production, and sociocultural context. His countless creations include the Lady armchair, and the Antropus armchair...
