Carlo Scarpa Cornaro Armchair by Cassina

About the Item

Carlo Scarpa Cornaro Armchair Manufactured by Cassina SCULPTURAL ELEGANCE A favourable balance between geometric rigour and enveloping shapes designed by maestro Carlo Scarpa. The Cornaro armchair celebrates the encounter of two opposites gracefully resolved between the sculptural wooden structure and the generously padded cushions set within it. Every detail embodies Cassina’s fine craftsmanship, starting with the exposed black saddle leather laces contained inside a grommet developed to simplify connecting the backrest to the structure. The proportions have been updated, increasing their height and depth, through in-depth research carried out in collaboration with Tobia Scarpa. LACES In exposed black saddle leather contained inside a grommet developed to simplify connecting the backrest to the structure. PADDING Recycled PET fibre and elements made of polyurethane with a percentage of polyols derived from biological sources and in CIRCULARREFOAM®. STRUCTURE Base in beech with glossy lacquer finish or ash with open-pore matte lacquer finish. Originally a sofa designed by Carlo Scarpa in 1973, Cornaro celebrates the graceful encounter of two opposites: on one hand, the geometric rigour of the base that embraces the seat, on the other, the generous padding in the seat cushions set within a sculptural wooden frame. The balance of contrasting shapes defines an armchair in which every detail was meticulously curated to highlight the original aesthetic of the model, like the exposed thin black saddle leather laces contained inside a grommet developed to simplify connecting the backrest to the structure. Cornaro is also available as a sofa and a two- or three-seat end element. The proportions have been updated, increasing their height and depth, through in-depth research and development work carried out in close collaboration with Tobia Scarpa. Architect, designer and artist, Scarpa left the Venice Academy of Art in 1926 and began professional work, but continued to visit craftsmen’s’ workshops and Venetian master glassworkers. For twenty years, right up until the second half of the Forties, he received numerous commissions to design, convert prepare buildings. About the manufacturer: In a continuing dialogue between past, present, and future, Cassina has created the I Maestri collection, revisiting furnishing designs by the twentieth century’s best-known architects, including Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Charlotte Perriand, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Franco Albini, Frank Lloyd Wright and Marco Zanuso. While the designs and functional concepts have been precisely preserved, the models have been manufactured using evolved technology. This is also the company that has manufactured iconic pieces of contemporary design from the 1950s to the present day, ideated by some of the most important international designers. Today Cassina continues to look to the future of design with audacious, passionate curiosity and an open, holistic approach. It affirms its exclusive ability to furnish a home’s living and dining spaces completely and iconically with The Cassina Perspective: a concept, a philosophy, an informed, futuristic thought. A detailed, expansive horizon of combinations; when placed together, the products have an innovative soul and the modern icons create authentic, welcoming, personal atmospheres involved in a conversation dominated by a code of design excellence, formal sensitive awareness, solidity and cultural authority.
