About the Item

Edward Wormley for Dunbar by Mobilier Universel, armchair, model '5762', teak, fabric, Belgium, design 1957 This dining chair is designed by Edward Wormley for the furniture company Dunbar in 1957 and manufactured by Mobilier Universel. The construction is characterized by a strict angular and open look. The seat and backrest are upholstered in a captivating patterned fabric with red and green hues. This chair, with its utter simplicity and precise scaling, embodies the hallmarks of the designer’s aesthetic vocabulary. Edward Wormley (1907–1995), was born in rural Illinois, United States. As a young man, he was passionate about design and enrolled in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1926, but left due to financial issues and began working for an interior design company. He later joined the Dunbar Furniture Company in Indiana, where he served as director of design for almost 40 years. Following World War Two, he became an independent design consultant. Wormley passed away in 1995, but his legacy of creating elegant and high-quality furniture lives on. He was a master in combining classical 20th century design with modern innovations. Mobilier Universel had the sole right to produce furniture for Dunbar. Jules Wabbes, at that time still very much involved with Mobilier Universel picked the desired models designed bu Edward Wormley for manufacturing. The designs that Wabbes choose from Wormley's collection were those that featured a simplistic, clean lines that would prove the be timeless. Kindly note that the chair is in good, used condition with signs of age and use. For further details, we encourage you to reach out to our team of design specialists.
