About the Item

A Fine 19th Century Chippendale Style Armchair This superb 19th-century example of a top-quality Chippendale open armchair is made from rich dense Cuban mahogany. The workmanship in the intricately carved details on this chair is equal to an original Chippendale piece. The back has a shaped and carved crest rail with a superb centre splat carved and decorated with foliate leaves, swags, and ribbons. From the back there are serpentine shaped arms which terminate with finely carved eagles’ heads, they have a shaped support again with foliate carving at the base. The plain drop in seat is upholstered in old brown leather with a patinated and polished surface. This fits into a mahogany frame which is supported by finely carved cabriole front legs with foliate decoration at the top and terminates in ball and claw feet. The back ones are of a plainer design but have a stylish back rake which adds stability. A very good 19th-century chair of classic design made from top quality dense timber with a good well patinated finish and colour. Circa 1880.
