French Mid-Century Modern Armchairs with Rush Seats, France 1960s
About the Item
Impressive in its simplicity, this pair of French mid-century armchairs carries with it the same beloved modernist characteristics applied to American, Scandinavian, and Italian mid-century design – simple, functional – inspired by traditional materials, techniques, and styles.
The design’s aesthetic is defined by the slatted backs and the expertly woven rush seats with a diagonal cross pattern commonly referred to as the “rush weave”. Not only is this technique outstandingly sturdy, it is beautiful as well, especially paired with the solid wooden frames. The design features versatile shapes, ranging from the curved armrests to the straight slats comprising the backs. The three slats on each chair are frames by the elongated back legs, creating a sculptural, architectural look. This refined look is beautifully contrasted by the raw, organic rusticity of the rush seats. In a true mid-century modern manner, these chairs are much more straightforward in construction and less pompous in nature than their forbearers, with clean, visible joinery and precise woodworking. As such, the chairs preserve their clean, clutter-free look that relies on the design itself for a great aesthetic experience. It is exactly this skill that French mid-century designers were in possession of, giving their work a timeless appeal.
This charming pair of French chairs was born from a desire to create a design that was comfortable, organic, and cosy in its simplicity. The skilled craftsmanship is evident, while the use of high-quality wood and rush make each piece a beautiful design heirloom on its own as well.
