"Futura" Beech Armchairs by David Rosén for Nordiska Kompaniet, Sweden 1950s

About the Item

Swedish furniture designer David Rosén is most well-known by his mid-century involvement with esteemed department store and modernist furniture manufacturer, Nordiska Kompaniet. Particularly prolific in the 1950s, Rosén his most famous series for the company called Futura, of which these chairs are also part of. Designed in 1949, these armchairs possess a refined and slender appearance with distinctive backrests composed of bars with hollow openings. With this design, these chairs are modern reinterpretations of the traditional ladder-back chair. On each chair, the curved armrests are supported by a solid beech frame with clean, sleek lines that are both functional and aesthetically appealing. Still, it is the back that defines the design of these “Futura” chairs. The holes on the three bars are quite eye-catching, making this model immediately identifiable. Visually they create an airy, light look for the chairs. In combination with the curved armrests and elongated legs, the overall impression is rather artistic. Furthermore, there is a perfect balance between the horizontal and the vertical lines, and between the materials. The solid beech frames’ polished surface contrast beautifully with the light bouclé cushions’ texture. Under the slogan 'First with the latest', Nordiska Kompaniet launched many novelties on the Swedish market. Among these were the Barbie doll, the nylon stocking, the television, and the “Futura” series including these chairs as well. The quality of Rosén’s design’s execution praises the company and its master craftsmen who gave form to many of Sweden's most famous modern furniture designs. Condition: In good vintage condition.
