Georgian 18th Century Elm Armchair

About the Item

A very attractive George II Period, 18th century Elm carver armchair, Retaining Exceptional Colour & Patina Throughout, Having Elegant Ribbon Carved Pierced Splat Back And Scrolling Arms, Over Drop In Seat Raised On Square Legs And Stretchers. This fabulous chair dates to the Mid-18th Century and unusually for a relatively formal design it is constructed from elm. This is a timber usually found in country and provincial furniture, made out in the provinces of the UK. However the intricacy of the design to the back of this beautiful desk chair is very formal and very much london influenced. We wonder whether perhaps it was constructed by a craftsmen native to the countryside who had spent some time working in a london workshop, but then returned home to the countryside for whatever reason. Unlike many chairs we find from this period the chair is of generous proportions, which in combination with the richness of the mahogany timber used and therefore the overall solidity of the chair, allows it to be used by just about anybody that so wishes. Certainly it is more than fit for original purpose. It has been recently reupholstered, meaning that should the rather attractive current fabric covering not be to the purchasers taste, it would be a relatively inexpensive task to have the drop in seat covered in a fabric of their own choosing. That said the current fabric is in excellent condition and works extremely well on the chair. As with all items we offer for sale the chair has been inspected at our workshops by our highly skilled, traditionally trained, antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish, ensuring that it is ready to place immediately into the home or office, before being offered for sale. circa 1750.
