Mid-19th Century Spoon-back Open Armchair Walnut, English Victorian circa 1850

About the Item

This is an excellent example of an antique spoon-back Arm Chair, a "design Classic" of the mid Victorian era. This elegant open armchair has a wide serpentine seat with a carved Walnut frame. The spoon back has crisply carved detail in the Rococo style with a central "heart" motif to the top cresting rail. The arms sweep round and down to form the front cabriole legs with more crisp scroll carving to the knees. The rear legs sweep out and back. Both feet terminate in there original white ceramic castors. The chair has been reupholstered in a heavy high quality paisley fabric to the seat, arm pads, rear of back and the back itself which has been deep buttoned. The walnut has mellowed and patinated to a lovely golden-tan color. Overall a finely carved, elegant and comfortable English antique armchair.
