Pair of Bertil Söderberg Armchairs in Mahogany for Nordiska Kompaniet, 1940s

About the Item

This rare pair of armchairs was designed by Bertil Söderberg and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden in the 1940s. The elegant shape of the design is emphasized by the buttoned wing shaped back and seat. The mahogany frame is connected with single slats on the sides and the front, and two slats on the back. The armrests are partly upholstered and finished with bronze colored upholstery nails. The chairs were recently reupholstered in a yellow wool fabric, with a matching decorative trim on the back side. The design was produced by Stockholm’s high end department store Nordiska Kompaniet (NK), who manufactured and retailed furniture designs by a number of renowned Swedish Modern designers including Axel Einar Hjorth, Elias Svedberg, Carl-Axel Acking and Kerstin Hörlin-Holmquist. This particular design by Bertil Söderberg was used in the interior of the Vingården restaurant in Stockholm. Both chairs are marked with a metal NK plate. Nordiska Kompaniet 'Hytte' Armchair in Solid Pine, Swedish Modern, 1940s
By David Rosén, Nordiska Kompaniet, Axel Einar Hjorth
Located in The Hague, NL
This rare armchair was produced by the Swedish company Nordiska Kompaniet in the early 1940s. It belongs to the 'Hytte' series, which is documented in several NK catalogs and advertisements from the time. The Hytte series was a continuation of Axel Einar Hjorth's Sportstugemöbler ("sports cabin furnishings"), a collection of pinewood furniture designed for country homes. After Hjorth, designer David Rosén carried on this style, creating several series for Nordiska Kompaniet. Crafted entirely from pinewood, the chair features club-shaped, tapered legs connected by stretchers, a slatted and slightly curved backrest, and carved armrests. It is versatile and can be used as a desk chair or an elegant side chair. The chair remains in completely original condition, with a natural and even patina on the pinewood. It shows minor wear consistent with age and use. One of the four furniture...

By Nordiska Kompaniet, David Rosén
Located in Utrecht, NL
