Pair of English Sheraton mahogany shield back armchairs, 1790

About the Item

Pair of generously proportioned English Sheraton mahogany shield back arm chairs with over rail upholstered seats. The chair backs are detailed with a finely carved rice sheaf above a bell flower in the center of the vertical back splat. The elbow supports are carved with laurel leaves and the legs are square and tapered with a slight flair to the foot. The seats have been re-webbed with linen, stuffed with horse hair fill, and upholstered in a gray striae horse hair fabric with brass tack detailing. England, circa 1790.     This pair of chairs is in fine overall condition and the seats have been newly reupholstered with brass tack trim. The wood of one chair is slightly lighter. Wear commensurate with age and use.
