About the Item

A fine matched pair of French Empire period fauteuils, each with a rectangular padded back, removable cushioned seat, and elegantly reeded and carved arms. The mahogany frames display rich carving to the arm supports, including stylized shells, anthemion, acanthus lappets, and foliate scrolls, all rising on saber legs — a hallmark of early 19th-century French neoclassical design. One fauteuil has been reupholstered in smooth brown leather with brass nailhead trim, the other in a cream ground printed cotton in sepia tones with a tropical botanical motif, also finished with nailhead trim. While the frames are of the same model and period, the differing upholstery makes them versatile for both symmetrical and eclectic interior schemes. Period & Attribution: Early 19th century, French Empire period, circa 1810–1825. The form, carving style, and construction are consistent with the work of Parisian menuisier-ébénistes producing high-quality seating for well-appointed residences during the Napoleonic and Restoration periods. Fabric Identification: The printed cotton upholstery on one chair is a vintage Abbey Fabrics textile, likely mid-20th century, with a toile de Jouy-style botanical print executed in monochrome sepia. This design evokes 18th- and 19th-century copperplate printing traditions while incorporating large-scale tropical foliage, reflecting an exotic influence popular in later reinterpretations. Dimensions: 35" H x 23" W x 20" D; seat height 17" Condition: Good. Minor scratches and indentations to wood finish consistent with age and use; leather is clean and well maintained while fabric has some discoloration beneath seat cushion. Provenance: A Private Collection: 1107 Fifth Avenue, New York City. These fauteuils embody the elegant austerity of the Empire aesthetic while offering a lively contrast in upholstery — a blend of period craftsmanship and updated decorative flair.
