About the Item

Of the finest quality, a pair of giltwood fauteuils à la reine by celebrated ebeniste, François Linke. Inspired by the French Regency and Louis XV style, this pair of armchairs from the Belle Époque period in France exhibits an extraordinary level of mastery in design and craftsmanship. Each has a serpentine and foliate-channeled frame on the back and seat apron embellished with Rococo motifs of carved coquillage (scallop shells), acanthus and rocaille, and rests on four cabriole legs with escargot feet. Fauteuils have an upholstered back, seat and armrests which are supported by an "S"- shaped scroll support. Seat offers eight-way, hand-tied spring construction; on the underside of which is a hand sewn label that reads "LINKE PARIS", France, circa 1910. "Perhaps the finest e´be´niste and bronzier of the late 19th century, Franc¸ois Linke produced, in collaboration with the sculptor Le´on Message´, furniture of the highest quality at his workshop at 170, rue du Faubourg-Saint-Antoine, and later circa 1902 had a showroom at 26, Place Vendo^me. As well as furniture made in an original gilt bronze-mounted rocaille style, Linke also produced copies of furniture in the styles of the ancien re´gime of the late 17th and 18th centuries. Although he established his workshop in 1881, Linke first came to public notice at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900, at which he was awarded a Gold Medal. He became the most sought after cabinet-maker of the early 20th century producing meuble de style and exhibited at many international exhibitions, including St. Louis (1904), Lie'ge (1905) and London (1908). Linke died in 1946 by which time the style with which he had made his name was no longer the height of fashion, but the workshops continued on a much reduced scale for some time." Condition:
Reupholstered. Wear consistent with age and use. Minor losses. Minor fading. Chairs have not been altered. They are in the original 19th century finish. Some fading of gilding and small flecks of leaf missing. Seats and backs are newly upholstered in a sumptuous silk fabric. Label on bottom of chair reads: "LINKE PARIS".
