About the Item

The Gazelle chair was designed by Dan Johnson in 1958 as part of a series of chairs that Johnson developed during and after completing a commission to design an apartment in Rome. Johnson hired Italian craftsmen to produce walnut, bronze, and aluminum versions of this line of chairs using traditional casting and weaving techniques dating back to antiquity. The Gazelle chair has a unique design with a curved backrest that resembles the horns of a gazelle. This version also features an aluminium seat and backrest cast in the shape of rattan caning. The Gazelle chair is an iconic piece of mid-century modern design highly sought after by collectors and this set is a particularly rare version.

Modernist Iron Strap Garden Armchairs Pair 1980s Salterini Style Brutalist MCM
By Russell Woodard, Mario Papperzini, Herbert Saiger, John Salterini, Francois Carre
Located in London, GB
A pair of gorgeous, impressive and rare Modernist iron strap vintage armchairs in wonderful, refinished condition. Likely made in the 1980s in continental Europe, these fabulously striking, assuredly robust and yet seductively sleek armchairs will add timeless sculptural elegance and bold sophistication to any outdoor setting. Impressively sized and reassuringly heavy, these stately armchairs are made of iron and due to their wide iron-strap seats and superbly sweeping backs are – rather surprisingly – extremely comfortable, even without a cushion! The gracefully flowing lines and over-curving back and arms are particularly stunning, and the large seats and broad backs make them the ideal statement garden chairs. Stylistically, the armchairs have an enhanced Post-Modernist 1980s assuredess to their more dainty design predecessors by Francoise Carré and Russell Woodard. Similar to Mario Papperzini for John Salterini and Herbert Saiger for Woodard’s more muscular 1970s iron strap chair...
