A pair of Gustavian open armchairs by J. Lindgren

About the Item

A pair of Gustavian open armchairs by J. Lindgren (master in Stockholm 1770-1800). Each with a rectangular back with a carved entrelac border above a rosette and entrelac frieze on tapering fluted legs. Both signed ILG. This exquisite pair of Gustavian open armchairs, designed by the renowned Swedish cabinetmaker J. Lindgren, epitomizes the refined elegance and understated beauty of late 18th-century Swedish neoclassical design. Characterized by their graceful, slender proportions and soft, neutral color palette, these armchairs are a prime example of the Gustavian style, which blends classical influences with Swedish craftsmanship. The frames are crafted from finely grained wood, with a delicate, hand-applied finish that has aged beautifully over time, showcasing a pale, distressed paintwork typical of the Gustavian aesthetic. The armrests, gently curved for comfort, flow seamlessly into the slender back and legs, which are tapered and fluted to add an air of sophistication. The open armchair design offers an inviting sense of space while retaining the structural integrity and elegance expected from a master craftsman like Lindgren. The finely upholstered seat cushions are likely to have been reupholstered in a period-appropriate fabric, enhancing both their aesthetic appeal and comfort. This pair of chairs is not only a functional seating choice but a striking statement of refined, historical taste—perfect for an interior seeking both beauty and practical elegance. Provenance Odensviholm mansion, Odensvi, Småland. The Fleetwood family. Purchased at the Odensviholm auction 1973, cat. nos. 613-15. Thence by descent.
