About the Item

PAIR OF FRENCH LOUIS XV BEECHWOOD FAUTEUILS EN CABRIOLET Stamped M . DELAPORTE on both rear chair rails Item # 1407NPK15P A very fine pair of restored Louis XV period arm chairs, both stamped along the interior edge of the back rail in each chair M. DELAPORTE, presumably the stamp of maître Martin Delaporte. Active during the second quarter of the 18th Century, the work of this talented menuisier is quite well documented and always highly developed. The present example are no exception, the frames being intricately carved, the crest rail a large flower flanked by leaflets, the apron portraying another flower with a slight turn and the same outward flowing foliage. Light molding follows the lines of the chair into the broad open arms, these with curled hand holds over cabriole arm supports. The legs join the frame with double-pinned tenon mortising, almost invisible in the grains of the beech before the deep carved triangle of fleurettes over the cabriolet of the leg. Each foot terminates in a wonderful scrolling French toe. The chairs were lovingly restored at some point in the last century, at which point one leg was replaced with a nearly identically carved leg - note the lack of peg pinning at the corner - and other necessary repairs were executed. As such, they remain in an outstanding state of preservation and can actively be enjoyed in the home without fear of unusual fragility. Any collector passionate about the fine works of the period will cherish this exquisite pair of chairs in their home for a lifetime. Measurements: 26 3/4" W x 23 3/4" D x 36 3/4" H; 17" H to seat Condition Report: Chairs professionally restored at one point, adding corner blocks to undersides, most legs with repairs, one leg (front right of right chair) replaced with exceptional skill; portions of the frame, legs and arms have splicing and patching. Extensive inactive worm damage throughout. Surface is not original, protected under wax and with obvious glazing to some areas, probably to hide some repairs.
