Pair of Tuscan Renaissance Style Walnut Armchairs
About the Item
This pair of carved Italian walnut chairs were made in the 18th century copying a 16th-century form. All the members are cut from large heavy walnut timber with a nice rich warm mellow color and patina. The construction method is with mortise and pegged fasteners and all the woods show the scribe and tool marks from joiners' hand-making process. The chairs are decorated with carved and gilded finials and then again at the arm with turned uprights between the seat and armrest. At the front are animal paw feet that are carved from the stretcher base. The chairs retain underneath the current upholstery much of the original thick heavy leather (see Photo 4) from the 18th century that once covered the chairs. The current exterior upholstery appears to be from the 1970s and is very much in keeping with the form and style of the chairs originally. Done in a patterned leatherette then trimmed out in fringe and large brass tacks it is in clean good shape and compliments the sculptural form of the chairs. The chairs a very stable and ready to use in good condition
