About the Item

Fantastic original model S10 lounge chair designed by Pierre Chapo and manufactured in his own atelier in Gordes, France 1964. This chair has a solid elm wooden frame which has an exquisite, detailed structure which is refined with Chapo’s signature mortise and tenon joints. The elm wood has a nice honey coloured wood toon and shows interesting grains to the structure. These signature joints are the assembly principle which allowed Chapo to extend his catalogue in 1964. The S10 became quickly one of the leading models at the Chapo gallery. The chair has a moveable back which brings more comfort when sitting on it as the back will adjust itself to your position. The chair has its original natural leather which is in good condition with a beautiful and original authentic patina which gives the chair a lot of extra character and makes it also more unique. This chair is a very early production, the woodworking details of this design are visible in the book by M Hagen gallery, page 55. The work of Chapo combines ancient woodworking skill and tradition with a contemporary approach. In designing his distinguished pieces, Solid oak, elm, teak, and ash were mainly used. After graduating from the Parisian École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in architectural studies, he travelled through Scandinavia, Central America, and the United States. After returning to the French capital, he opened his own gallery in 1958 on boulevard de l’Hôpital 14, where among other artists mainly his and Isamu Noguchi’s creations were on display. In 1960, he received a gold medal from the city of Paris as a token of appreciation for his contributions to the city. The work by Pierre Chapo is parallel to the designs by Charlotte Perriand. Due to the increase of demand for those pieces, Pierre Chapo’s work is highly sought after as its similar in many ways. Pierre Chapo is for sure one of the best designers from French soil, clearly to be seen at his architectural designs and craftsmanship.
