René Herbst Armchair No. 14, circa 1928

$15,500per item

A rare armchair of nickel-plated tubular steel and calfskin cushions by French modernist René Herbst. Herbst was a founding member of the Union des Artistes Modernes, an influential group of progressive designers that included: Eileen Gray, Le Corbusier, Jean Prouvé, Pierre Jeanneret, Pierre Chareau, Robert Mallet-Stevens and Charlotte Perriand, among many others. What these different artists shared was a collective sentiment that, going forward, design should no longer reference the past, or as Herbst described it, “to create without looking back.” Much of the work that this group introduced exhibited the shared ideal of function over ornamentation and an aesthetic that made use of readily available industrial materials. Armchair No. 14 is a well-documented example of early French modernism and the shift set into motion by the UAM group towards the aesthetic Avant Garde. Two available. Priced individually.
