About the Item

Saghi armchair designed by Kazuhide Takahama for Simon Gavina, Italy 1970. Chrome metal frame, soft cotton fabric upholstery, excellent condition, restored. Kazuhide Takahama (1930 - 2010) was born on the Japanese island of Kyushu. In 1953 he graduated from Tokyo Institute of Technology with a degree in architecture. At 27, he became a lecturer at the same university and got his first assignment as a designer: Takahama was commissioned to set up the Japanese pavilion for the 11th Milan Triennale in 1957. It is on this occasion that he meets Dino Gavina. This first meeting would mark an important turning point in his career and the beginning of a fruitful collaboration and deep friendship. Before returning home, Kazuhide Takahama designs the Naeko sofa for Gavina (Takahama's first design to be mass-produced and marketed). During his stay in Japan, he worked as a university professor and curator of architectural and design projects, but he still maintained contact with Gavina, who eventually convinced him to move to Italy. He arrived in Italy in 1963 with his wife Naeko and eldest daughter Kaori and settled in Bologna. Numerous collaborations with Italian design companies-Gavina, Simon, Paradisoterrestre, B&B, Sirrah (later absorbed by Guzzini) just to name a few. His professional activities are not limited to furniture and lighting design: he designs interiors and exteriors and oversees renovations of private residences and public commissions. These include the facade and vip lounge at Guglielmo Marconi Airport and canopies at bus stops in Bologna. For these and other pieces of historic Italian design follow our SECOND YOUTH gallery, we offer customized research and restoration services.
