Handsome pair of vintage Hans Wegner for Johannes Hansen JH-513 teak and cognac leather conference chairs. Wegner's conference chairs of this period take inspiration directly from Designmuseum Danmark's own 18th century 'Spanish Travelling Chair', which, featuring a stretched leather seat and large armrests, influenced both Wegner and his good friend Borge Mogensen as young students of design. Mogensen's interpretation of the antique travelling chair is more of a direct quotation, seen clearly in his Spanish easy chair (1958). Wegner instead combined the turned legs and carved armrests of his successful "round chair" (JH501), with the rigid form of the antique design. He also conceived of a thinly upholstered, curved plywood backrest panel; this feature gives the impression of a stretched leather backrest while prioritizing firm comfort and enhancing strength.
