Vintage Hans Wegner AP-16 Lounge Chair in Oak & Cognac Leather, 1951

About the Item

Hans Wegner is one of the few designers working in the applied arts who consistently offers a confident, mature harmony between aesthetics and functionality. A trained cabinetmaker, Wegner conceives of his furniture forms with a deeply intimate understanding of the limitations and strengths of his material—in this case—expertly selected and aged, accurately joined, and deeply patinated old growth oak wood—a dense, heavy temperate hardwood timber which Denmark and other Scandinavian nations cherish and prefer—boasting some of the highest quality and best managed oak forests in the world. His formal lines and motifs, often drawing on ancient Nordic seafaring culture, as well as the history of European architecture and interior design—are so sophisticated they appear simple, so understated they’re hard to discern, and sometimes so subtle that it takes years for the full intelligence and beauty of a Wegner design to be understood. Ergonomics are never sacrificed for beauty, quality is never sacrificed for price or time-saving—the integrity of these pieces and the craft culture that produced them are major reasons that these works are among the most celebrated, copied, and collectible furniture of the 20th century. This particular model features several stunning examples of elite workmanship through exposed joinery which was hand-shaped and finished by AP Stolen artisans. The seat rail to arm connection is particularly intriguing—sculptural, inviting, a joy to behold as well as use. Commodious, robust, poised, balanced and braced—the humble seat becomes a throne honoring the applied arts, woodworking, nature and it’s beauty, aesthetics, Scandinavian culture, and an anthropomorphic expression of the human form. Note: Two examples came from the same collector’s estate. We have an additional example in black leather and teak—they can be sold together as a mixed pair upon client’s request.

Vintage Arne Hovmand-Olsen for Mogens Kold Teak Lounge Chair-Denmark, 1960s
By Mogens Kold Møbelfabrik, Arne Hovmand-Olsen
Located in Brooklyn, NY
A lovely and dynamically-proportioned lounge or easy chair attributed to Arne Hovmand-Olsen and manufactured by Mogens Kold Møbelfabrik (metal manufacturer's stamp to underside) in sculpted teak and original boucle wool upholstery. Deeply patinated teak lends visual contrast against the off-white upholstery. Completely original condition down the the seat straps and brass hardware. Sophisticated seat cushion and backrest mounting system consisting of custom brass spacers which create a suspended effect to the panels keeping the design very airy and light. Hovmand-Olsen’s designs span seating, tables, and secretaries, all of which are characteristically simple in form with clean lines, organic curves, and tapered legs. Like many of his Danish contemporaries, he favored the use of high-quality, beautifully grained woods like teak and rosewood. Notable designs include his Model 175 chair (1955)—which is often mistaken for N.O. Møller’s Model 77 chair...
